At The Worlds Table. Zdzisław Jurkiewicz

Opening: December 14, 2019

Exhibition: December 15, 2019 – February 01, 2020

At the World’s Table showcases paintings, photographs and texts by Zdzisław Jurkiewicz (1931–2012), a co-creator of Wrocław’s avant-garde art scene. The exhibition features works from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, seeking to examine one of the predominant characteristics of the artist’s work and personality: extremely careful analytical observation of the world while taking delight in it at the same time. Jurkiewicz is often perceived as a Conceptual artist, whose works are informed by a “cool” scientific approach. Yet, this is only one of the aspects of his activity, which in fact escapes definitions and generalisations. Jurkiewicz as an artist was motivated by a cognitive passion and enchantment with the universe. The artist, who travelled rarely and reluctantly, used to say that he created while “sitting at the world’s table” – finding everything that inspired and fascinated him in his small apartment in Wrocław, which functioned simultaneously as a painting studio, a botanic garden, and an astronomic observatory, from which he could presumably observe almost every place on the globe and in the cosmic space.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication released in November 2019 by the Art and Culture Centre (OKiS) in Wrocław with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage

The exhibition is organised with the financial support of the Lower-Silesian Region Self-Government.
