Workshop of the Film Form - new book published by Arton Foundation

Warsztat Formy Filmowej is a Polish-English publication edited by Marika Kuźmicz and Łukasz Ronduda.

The book is a compilation of the achievements of Warsztat Formy Filmowej, which was an avant-garde group operating at the Film School in Łódź (PWSFTviT im. L. Schillera) between 1970 and 1977.

Warsztat was founded by students and graduates of the Film School, among others by: Wojciech Bruszewski, Andrzej Różycki, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Józef Robakowski, Paweł Kwiek, then Kazimierz Bendkowski, Janusz Połom, Antoni Mikołajczyk and Ryszard Waśko joined them. The artists in the group refused the classic narrative and the traditional film media, becoming part of the area between cinematography and modern art. Nowadays this group is known as the most important formation of structural cinema in Central and Eastern Europe.

The book contains information regarding all of the aspects of Warsztat’s activity: films, photographic experiments, video art (Warsztatowcy were the precursors of video art in Poland), performative actions; the authors discuss the relations of the group members with the Higher School of Film and their contribution towards creating its education model over the years.

In the publication, the readers will find an analysis of the collaborative actions of Warsztat as well as the existence and formation of strong creative individuals as parts of the collective.  The book presents and analyses the inspirations of the participants of Warsztat Formy Filmowej, which relate to, among others, the activity of the pre-war Polish avant-garde, in particular to the works of Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, Włodysław Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro.

The editors of the publications invited an international team of authors to cooperate with them. George Clark, Maeve Connolly, Mike Sperlinger and Jan Verwoert wrote the essays for the book.
