Natural Situations features seven works by Agnieszka Niziurska created between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. On the one hand, the exhibition revisits the first period of the artist’s practice, associated with New Expression, when her principal subjects were mountains – particularly Himalayan expeditions – and, occasionally, scenes responding to the contemporary political situation in the countries of the Eastern Bloc. On the other, it presents little-known works painted with earths and made using frottage, in which nature is literally transferred onto the canvas: layers of earth, peat, salt and grain, together with tracings of tree bark, form abstract compositions. This juxtaposition follows the artist’s path from expressive painterly gesture towards the materiality of nature itself – from representing the elements to working directly with them and literally introducing them onto the canvas by taking an imprint or a sample.

Agnieszka Niziurska was born in Warsaw in 1955. In 1980, she graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she studied in Jan Tarasin’s studio. During martial law, she boycotted official art life, taking part in exhibitions held in churches and presentations in private flats. Since the mid-1990s, she has used earth and simple minerals alongside paint as painting materials. Her works are held, among others, in the collections of Zachęta – National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Warsaw.
