The Case of Jadwiga S.

Opening: 14 September 2019

Exhibition: 15 September – 26 October

The title of the exhibition alludes to a film by another artist, Izabella Gustowska’s The Case of Josephine H., devoted to the recently uncovered work of the wife of famed painter Edward Hopper. Josephine personifies creative women, unappreciated during their lifetime, whose work was so often ignored. The “case” of Jadwiga Singer is another particularly drastic example of neglect and marginalization of the work of a female artist. She worked in photography, film and video and was one of the cofounders of the Laboratorium TP group in Katowice as well as the group’s theoretician. Together with Grzegorz Zgraja, Marek Kołaczkowski and Jacek Singer, she was actively involved in the work of the group as the creator of numerous works and theoretical texts. With the passage of time she was forgotten, and never lived to see her work studied. The impetus for holding this exhibition was Marika Kuźmicz’s location of the artist’s archive in the spring of 2018. Currently the archive is being catalogued. The exhibition represents the first fruit of this process and is also the first individual exhibition of Jadwiga Singer.
